In July of 1976, after observing Kris Atkinson creating portrait sculptures in the Gallery display window, Mrs. Joe Louis approached the artist and commissioned a portrait bust be created for presentation as a gift to her husband. Several days later, "The Brown Bomber" sat for the artist as caliper measurements, photos, and other critical related data were recorded.

In creating this sculpture, I thought about the blissfull love shared between a mother and her nursing child. In this pose, I could also envision a musician holding and strumming a guitar while singing a song of love. Thus the title, "Maternal Melody". My brother wrote the accompanying verse.

"Maternal Melody"

A mother sings her song
Her child sings harmony
A melody of love's
Universal Symphony.

Title: "Desert Moon" by Kris Atkinson                        Medium: Acrylics on Canvas                         Size: 73" X 49" Framed

Privately Owned — NFS — This art piece is being exhibited in the artist's on-line gallery for display purposes only!

I painted "Desert Moon" while living in Southern California in late 1977. This art piece was done as a personal Christmas gift for my beloved and late "Uncle Ron" Atkinson, who first inspired me to draw at the age of three as we sat and copied the syndicated "Nancy" cartoons from the Sunday newspaper. "Desert Moon" was inspired by referencing three photos from different SouthWestern sites having the same directional light source which I then merged into a single composition. So don't try to figure it's location. The depiction in my painting does not geographically exist but rather was created by mixing a little imagination with some artistic license. The left-sided foreground does display an actual ancient Indian ceremonial site located in the desert of New Mexico while the right-sided background is a well known mountainous rock formation in the Arizona deserts. The deep reaching carved trench was something I just made up to add an enhanced perception of depth and to draw the viewer into the composition. A third photo was referenced for the moon and I placed it where I liked best.

Petroglyphs and Pictographs appear all over the world in one form or another and are seemingly derived from an inherent human drive to leave a mark upon cave dwelling walls or the faces of rock to tell a story, mark a spot, commemorate a spiritual experience or simply as an attempt at physical immortality. Petroglyphs are carved, pecked or chipped into stone. Pictographs are painted onto stone and are more fragile than petroglyphs. The symbols of this ancient and mysterious race such as spirals, zigzag lines, strange stick figures, and a hump-backed flute player to name a few, appear on signs, billboards, furniture and popular fashion merchandise today. Some say that their true meanings can only be guessed.

Kris Atkinson's own original Pictographic and Petroglyphic creations make for a legal and ethical means to enjoy the exciting look of authentic South Western Rock Art while also becoming the proud owner of a One-of-a-Kind Original Art Piece by Global Award Winning Artist, Kris Atkinson. This one-of-kind original art piece was created to exactingly replicate a section of Rock Art as if had been chiseled out and plundered away from it's original site find. In reality, this would of course be both quite unethical and illegal. Not to worry though,... Now you can have the best of both worlds in this one-of-a-kind decorative wall art piece.

In November of 1977, using the same exacting reference data, Kris Atkinson completed a second rendition (above) for display in his own gallery collection. Because of it's revised stance, texture, and patina, this One-of-a-Kind piece is considered to be one of his finest works. Kris Atkinson has the honor of being the only sculptor for whom Joe Louis ever sat, and since the work is true to Mr. Louis' exact life-size proportions, it is inherently a historic collectors piece.

This is my portrayal of a typical doghouse on planet Velluvia as observed from my latest astro-projections. There are a total of 64 planets in the Nephar Solar System which is nearly half-way across the SillaStar Gallaxy and blocked from earth's view by the brilliant radiance of nearly 250,000,000 suns with all but three having planets of their own. In perfect orchestration, this cellestial slurry is choreographically pulled through six consecutive inward spiralling black holes stretching ever more deeply into the vastness of space while travelling timelessly along the way towards this Velluvian Planet. No one else seems to know much about these things at this time as it's all yet to be discovered.
